2025-01-02: According to media reports, the anti-corruption authority could execute an arrest warrant against President Yoon on Thursday (2 January). The president has announced his opposition to the measure and called on his supporters to protest. The anti-corruption authority has announced that it will arrest the president by Monday (6 January), before the arrest warrant expires. The arrest warrant allows the president to be detained for an initial period of 48 hours.
Heightened security measures, operations of security forces and demonstrations are to be expected. Violent protests are possible. Travellers are advised to exercise caution, to strictly avoid demonstrations, road blockades, large gatherings, and deployments of security forces, and to follow instructions from security forces.
