2021-12-09: On Thursday (16 December) trade unions called a national strike to protest against the government’s 2022 budget. According to the Italian newspaper La Repubblica, the strike will not affect the health or transport sectors. Rallies are planned in several cities. In Rome, a demonstration will take place at Piazza del Popolo.
Heightened security measures as well as disruptions to traffic and public life are to be expected. Violent clashes between protesters and security forces are possible. Travellers are advised to exercise caution, to strictly avoid demonstrations, road blockades, large gatherings, and deployments of security forces, and to follow instructions from security forces.
